Deciding Your Future: Techie or CISO? Let’s Break It Down LIMITED

You have been a techie and developed great security skills. Now you want to move into management, should you? Will you be happy there? How will your life change? Is this a good move? How will you get there? This session will examine what this career choice really means. The session will explore the differences between operating as a technical staff vs the functions and challenges a manager faces. This will discuss the competencies required and will help those trying to decide upon this career choice. The instructor has held Global CISO/security leadership roles across multiple organizations, after starting out as a techie computer programmer and then DBA. I have also authored the #1 Best Selling Cybersecurity book (2019- 2023) and 2020 CANON Cybersecurity Hall of Fame Winner CISO COMPASS: Navigating Cybersecurity Leadership Challenges with Insights from Pioneers, and also hosted the weekly CISO STORIES Podcast, where I interviewed almost 200 top CISOs and industry leaders, as well as publishing #1 Hot New Release “The Privacy Leader Compass: A Comprehensive Roadmap for Building and Leading Practical Privacy Programs” book (2024). I have shared actionable advice from CISOs. In this session, I lay out the differences in the jobs, the skills required, and challenge the participants, interactively, to decide what path they want to take. People waste many years of their careers trying to decide, when making a decision pushes the individual along a more constructive development path with the chosen direction best for that person (techie or CISO). Many security professionals reach this decision point and wonder what to do. Instead of spending 10-20 years of your life wondering which direction to take, this session will help put the security professional on the right path to be able to focus on the right development opportunities.
