Implementing a modern PAM (Privileged Access Management) solution garners a lot of hype. More robust access controls are what the Infosec Gods say one’s Wild-Wild-West organization needs to inch closer to the promised land, the fabled city of Zero Trust. However, what if the powers-that-be shudder at the idea of the full vision of modern PAM, in fear of the threat of productivity loss? It seems safer to accept the risks and go for a partial implementation—what can go wrong? Is that risk REALLY understood? When your adversaries are akin to Magica de Spell, armed with black magic? Or like the Black Knight with impeccable talent to exploit any and every vulnerability? What if your adversaries manage to get their hands on the ultimate weapon in your network that can navigate through, literally, ANYTHING? How can they be stopped? Or at best, slowed down? No, you’re not dreaming—rest assured this talk is about Privileged Access Management. This talk goes into various types of accounts, and critical roles that access control plays regarding the privileges they hold. Then, let’s kick it up a notch; we’ll explore how the absence least privilege can lead to bad times—but enforcement of such strategy can also lead to logistical nightmares. Also, are there ways to implement a robust PAM solution…on a budget fit for a miserly duck? You’ve guessed it. We’ll explore the questions above using DuckTales metaphors.
